Disaster Response
The Disaster Response team is responsible for preparing TEAC and LKSOM students to assist in the event of a local, national or international crisis. The Disaster Response team prepares students by organizing practical emergency skills trainings and disaster response education events. The Disaster Response team also serves as a liaison between the Temple Medical Reserve Corp and student body to coordinate disaster response programs in which students can participate.
In Spring 2019, we partnered with Temple University’s Emergency Management Department to run a Point of Distribution to administer mumps vaccines during the outbreak on campus, which was a great opportunity to show our knowledge and skills learned from the POD drill we did the year before. In the spring, we held multiple lunch talks to teach medical students Triage and mass casualty response techniques. A group of these students also attended a mass casualty incident drill with the local Temple EMS group.
This Fall, our committee will be planning efforts to help support the community in Maui that has been devastated by wildfires.
Apart from these larger scale trainings and certifications the disaster response branch holds several smaller trainings such as how to perform a primary assessment, psychological first aid, fracture splinting, and bleeding control.
